Profile of An Hawaiian Princess
By Kimon Iannetta, MGA, BCFE, ABFE, ACFE, ASIS
Princess Kaiulani (1875-1899) was a beautiful and talented girl who was to be the hope of the Hawaiian Monarchy. However, fate played a hand in altering her destiny.
Her mother died when the princess was a little girl. Just before she lost her mother, Princess Kaiulani wrote the following letter to her father.

Her large and flourished capital I reveals her sense of self-confidence. The drooping y in "baby" shows her feeling of helplessness at her inability to save her ailing mother. The tangled lines indicate a worried and confused State.
After her mother's death, she was sent to England to be educated. The Princess learned her lessons well. She expressed culture and refinement in the style, graceful movements, and rhythm in her writing.
For years, she bore the loneliness of this strange land and grieved for her Hawaiian home. The second writing sample was written shorly before she died at age 23. The unfinished lower loops of her "y" reflect her loneliness. The drooping words "possibility;" "my;" "political;" and "interest" show disappointment, as confirmed by her own words in the text: "I must have been born under an unlucky star, as I seem to have my life planned out for me in such a way that I cannot alter it.
The princess retained a forward slant to her script, expressing strong emotions and sensitivity to experiences. Her nature was gentle (rounded writing), yet rebellious in spirit (enlarged letter k). She felt strongly about political issues (initial p stem). In both examples of her writing, the t bars are high and long, revealing enthusiasm, purpose, and distant goals. As she grew older her writing became smaller, indicating a stronger focus of attention and a more introverted nature.
Had her hopes been fulfilled, she would have become a fitting queen for the islands. With her spirited nature, strength of character, and idealism, she would have left a strong impact on the history of Hawaii.
